Alaina Ferris
Founder of the Music Room

Teaches Piano, Composition & Theory, Voice, Celtic Harp, Guitar, & Ukulele

Hello! I’m Alaina (she/her) and I have been teaching private music lessons in Park Slope for 11 years. I founded The Music Room in January 2020 to create a guild of professional musicians and music educators. Having a dedicated teaching and practice studio outside of my home was an essential step for me both as a composer and an educator. My dream is to empower other independent music educators by providing a stable community within a beautiful, affordable space.

I offer private music lessons in piano, voice, Celtic harp, guitar, and ukulele (ages 5 through adult). Lessons are fun and tailored to a student’s personal goals—whether they are looking to improve their vocal technique, master a series of Preludes, prepare for middle or high school auditions, or simply learn their instrument for the first time.

My goal as a teacher is to guide students in finding and developing their passion for music. This is done by addressing what interests and inspires each student and through that interest, implementing core musical concepts such as music theory, aural skills, and technique.

I focus on a balanced teaching style that takes a holistic look at each student’s needs and goals. I measure success not by a student’s mastery of a song, but instead by the student’s overall relationship with their music practice.

I have a B.A. in Music and English from The University of Denver, where I studied at the Lamont School of Music. I have an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from New York University. When I’m not teaching, I’m composing and music directing for theater.
